We cant play multiplayer anymore :'(

Me and my friend have been playing this game for years. We were actually playing when gamespy went down. We both spent £15 each buying the game we already owned again from Steam to continue.
Now however although the game starts the lag is unbelievably bad... I mean it's totally unplayable... I never had any of these problems before I'm sure it is because of the steam connection. Does anyone have an idea of what I miht be able to do or are our civ 4 playing days over :( :( :(

p.s my computer isnt massive, it has 2gb of ram but it always used to manage civ 4 fine until the steam change :(

P.p.s the game works fine on single player, its just the multiplayer that is the problem but this was the only reason we bought the game again

I have exactly the same issue, used to run smoothly but now it's lagging really bad, no matter what graphic options I change :( the lag is only there when playing online, LAN and single player works smoothly.

try using evolve or gameranger

1) Install cd version patch it to 319, dont apply steam patch.
2) If u gona have only 2 human players in the game, u can use multiplayer->direct ip from the game menu.
3) If u want to play with more than 2 u need to have some virtual lan software like evolve or hamachi. In this case u will need to use multiplayer->Lan games.

Thus u will play nonsteam version, and u wont have these lags.

But as i understand it, direct ip doesnt work anymore now that gamespy is down... We used to use hamachi months ago but it stopped working...

1) As i said direct ip works if u want to have only 2 human players in game.
2) Hamachi must work because u use lan, not direct ip.

Evolve is the answer, Game Ranger seems to have only a very small hand full of occasional players, I'm forming an Evolve group just for civ 4 bts players as well to serve as a social hub for networking games.

I use Evolve, in Parties with Friends, and it works immaculately, whereas using Steam Servers would lags the seven shades of ♥♥♥♥ out of it.

well for new players its really much easier to find game on steam (on evolve rarely an ffa is hosted and in teamers nobody lets noobs since its pointless with them), only downside on steam is 4 players limit, and sometimes it is kinda laggy, but playable mostly, you can tho, sometimes ffas are hosted
