This is the best racing sim ever made

Hands down, sure newer games have better graphics, but this sim has so much soul its unreal. Running those 575 and 550 ferraris around the tracks is just bliss. So hyped to be playing this again. It's incredible how realistic it is with just a few choice mods.

Half way through my first 2005 season race at monza, just wishing it was over, the most boring track ever. Was in first place but sat in the pits waiting for something to happen without realizing I needed to shut my engine off. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ love this game. It really just feels so alive, definitely need to get one of those AI mods though the AI is good but at the same time they don't seem to be aware of my presence. Overall though, screaming down the monza straights in a 550 maranello with my trackir, and crewchief on there's just nothing really like it. Can't wait for the WEC game to release hopefully it doesnt suck, being its basically a modded rfactor 2 I think it might be good.

Nice to see someone enjoing the game :) Reading your posts remind of days when I returned to GTR2. I returned to GTR2 in 2020 and honestly I do not miss newer games. It would be great if rF2 (and WEC) succeed, but my impression is that focus there is towards online racing, which is understandable as that's where majority of players is, but that's not what I personally want from the game.

When I returned to GTR2 from rF2 the primary thing surprised me is that AI works better in a sense that I can complete full races without it killing me or constant SC phase. It is not perfect, but I think simpler physics of GTR2 make it easier for AI to be more usable than it is in rF2. My guess rF2 physics got updated but AI did not receive much love. The only thing I miss in GTR2 is the formation/standing start procedure, which dents our ability to use GTR2 as a base for F1 racing but maybe I'll solve that one day ;)

I agree with everything said here. The things I liked the most from GTR2 is I could pause a race anytime, save, quite, come back and resume.. You can let your teammate drive, and change his/her skills. I learned to adjust the AI so they were perfect, and races seemed realistic to me.
Plus, they actually scored championship points based on the class. I still don't see this anywhere else.

Yeah, while AI is not perfect, in my case they bump into me in braking zone mostly. So when I am seting up new AI for new series, I pretty much adjust their conrering ability (for lap time) and braking ability (to avoid them running into me). Two values in .plr file - that's it. I cannot achieve such AI racing anywhere else so far.

With the addition of safety car (at last!) AMS2 begins to look promising replacement, but there are still some limitations there... In GTR2 I can run 70 car grid in VR in any conditions. Will AMS2 be able to do that? Hopefully, we'll see...

Biggest issue I have with ams2 is the 31 max car count limit. So strange they settled for that. Still running my monza race, being able to save mid race is so fantastic. I adore singleplayer and think its the biggest plus for GTR2. I have iracing but haven't raced much lately. Racing AI and being able to do a full season with points is what makes GTR2 so great. I hate just hotlapping or doing a one off race. The new endurance dlc for ams2 is pretty cool. I think the same cars in iracing are far better feeling. I hear iracing has some fantastic AI as well, haven't tried it. Only thing is theres no way to do a full season of racing in it.

I really cannot wait for the WEC game, I really hope the rfactor 2 devs deliver. RF2 is easily the best feeling sim right next to iracing. We'll find out next month.

Yes, I love rF2 but I am afraid focus in LMU will be on online racing, hopefully I am wrong.

The rolling standing starts in AMS2 are fine. They work, there is ghosting in the pits or else you'd get clobbered. I really hope the LMU game will release with at least letting us run a season like GTR2. I don't need a full blown career mode like the f1 games although that would be really cool. Shame endurance racing doesn't get the shine it deserves. It's the best racing has to offer.

I realize I am a couple weeks late to the convo but... I have over a hundred hours playing with xbox 360 and xbox one controllers, and can safely say the game plays pretty good with them. No rumble is a bummer. I am able to put the difficulty up past 100 percent though. 10 percent deadzone recommended, otherwise default settings.

Make sure to get the 16th anniversary patch, it improves the game quite a bit. For racing against AI, the SHO mods (included in the anniversary patch) are a must have.

It has stood the test of time with today's graphics and operating systems. The whole series from the devs did a great job.

Yesterday I rectified what appears to be an 18 year oversight in not having purchased GTR2 before. I've dabbled a bit with the keyboard as input and zoomed around Monza a few times. I have a Wingman wheel n pedals which isn't that much older than the game, tbh.
Following a Guide I found here I've managed to restore the Ferrari and Porsche cars, so connecting steering wheel and pedals tomorrow should be interesting :)

I was just watching some footage of GT 7, and it's wild how the graphics are sooooo freaking good, but the single player racing is absolutely abysmal. Pretty much the case for all modern racing sims.
Meanwhile in this game racing huge fields of WTCC or GT300 cars, driving on the limit for half an hour or more with really smart AI nipping at my heels, is just an incredible experience. I deeply wish this style of driving sim hadn't been abandoned.
