Character unlocks
I was interested in this game after I saw they added other playable characters, but unfortunately it seems they have to be unlocked first? So does that mean I have to play the game until I progress enough to unlock it, then start a new save file, or how does that work?

I've played a little bit. You do unfortunetly have to play for about an hour or two to unlock the first character. After that it takes a few days to unlock another or some colors. So hope the dailies for that day are easy and don't require too much progression so you can make your throwaway character just to play the one you want to.
As for what you can unlock, the characters are a male scientist, a male reptile warrior, and a female elf botanist. The first character costs 200 credits (dailies give about 300ish, so you don't even have to do all of them.) Color packs cost 200 each and there's a few of them.

Yeah, unfortunately it take few hours, that is way to short...
Honestly? Is that really a problem? You can unlock all of the characters so quickly that it is really no issue.

IT's not the time investment itself, it's the time investment into a throwaway save file. IT feels ♥♥♥♥♥♥ to play for a couple hours on a save file with no attachment that only exists to grind up the currency to make the character and save file you actually want to play.

It is weird for me to see such a dislike for getting unlocks this way (perhaps I was too mean, sorry), I mean I also dislike having runs that serve no purpose, but your first run should help you understand the game. Quinn is great for that her skill set makes her very universal. I started single player game with Quinn so I could unlock another character to play with my friend (so we can play different characters) but I am continuing this playthrough and I intend to finish it.

As for unlocking characters, it is fairly easy, I bet you can unlock 1st character within 4hours, maybe a while longer if you are unlucky with daily missions.
To unlock a character you need credits. You can credits in 2 ways:
1) each new day gives you 10 credits
2) by completing daily objectives you can get 20-30 credits per objective, some of them are trivial, other you will do anyway with no effort on your part (i.e. build a workstation)

Oh yes it is very easy, I unlocked my first character around 2-3 hours yeah. I still; just felt like it was a pointless endeavor. I'd like to see the system maybe moved to costume unlocks rather then character unlocks or something similiar. I do like a sense of meta progression. I just don't dig it when it's a "Do these chores and then you can actually play the game" style of meta progression. Actually, an idea I have that I would LOVE to see, is if you started with every character unblocked, right? But then had the option to play with a characters appearance and voice, but another characters talent tree. Like I love Khaanga, and his voice his hilarious, the constant bickering with his alter ego is *chefs kiss*. But I super dig Zhanes talent tree.

you can bring a new character into an existing save and even the story

You can, but I found there are weird little quirks and bugs. They're mostly nonissues, but it was enough to bother me. That and since I had no attachment to the save file, I didn't really endeavor to do anythign save for the dailies. My first save file that was like ~3 hours just to unlock a character, I didn't even built a base. I plonked down a frabrication bench and storage chest at the crab people and just lived off the land until I had 200 credits. Then rolled a new character to play for real.

I passively unlocked about 400 points just playing without trying to earn them. It doesn't take long, just play for a bit, then they'll be unlocked. Dailies unlock a large amount, and each day unlocks about 10 credits.

So how do you actually apply new suit colours purchased? the doesnt seem to be a customise screen
DragynDance May 1, 2024 @ 11:21am
When you load your game or start a new game, you can recustomize your suit color there at that screen, even change characters.
Thre's a little bit of weirdness to it, like crafted armor seems to "remember" the colors of who crafted it and when, so for armor you craf tto update, you need to recraft a new set.

Cool, I did not know about that.
