Maybe just add one minor change and have another chest of exotic matter? That way players can head home to make a better drill.
Although, yes, you can attack the enemy fighter in the planet's orbit. The best way would be to board it (assuming a good shield and weapon), possibly getting an exotic matter from the storage after defeating the alien. Also, it makes it easier to destroy the fighter once the pilot is dead, as it doesn't fight back. Farming them in this way is a good way to obtain exotic matter for such a situation without cheats.
I just would like a failsafe for anyone who does save their game on their spaceship, when they have no way out and even dying or exiting to the main menu won’t undo it. There is one way to get exo matter without a working drill, but it’s not always a guarantee. I’ll start a new comment.
Also, if you go there in the jumpship or a dragon fighter you can exit out and erase the progress, then come back more prepared.
I was actually stuck like that. I had to change the difficulty of the game to 'casual' and then I was able to defeat an alien in his ship, getting an exo matter to go back to the previous planet.
