I am ABSOLUTELY NOT objective, but I can tell you that in November, the game will be released (we will announce the exact release date very soon), and you can use the different reviews to make the choice that will suit you best.
Indeed, the game experiences are slightly different, it is up to you to see, by looking at the reviews and let's play, which game you want to play the most

Communication / Playtest @Crying Suns
To compare:
I've played the demo of Crying Suns for four days straight, I am still engrossed with the Crying Suns world, so much so, I've been trying to find as many random encounters that build any iota of my knowledge of it. The devs have crafted a really interesting universe, where things seem much more than just a backdrop for a rogue lite game. It feels rich and tangible.
Although you'll be able to get ftl dirt cheap, I think Crying Suns would be a more enriching experience, and more worthy of a birthday present. But don't miss out on playing ftl.
Being locked in to a single chapter in Crying Suns unless you forfeit all progress in officers and ships is pretty lame. The devs have mentioned they are considering changing that but I can only judge the game by what I see in the game now at this current point in time.
At that price it is difficult to imagine a better value on STEAM for RL fans, especially considering replayability with unlocks.
This game is the closest to an actual FTL play style of all of the FTL-like/lites I have tried, only more fleshed out, so well worth the off-sale price (granted I did buy it at 20% off).
The easiest answer is buy FTL and see if you like it, because if you don't you may likely dislike CS.
Also realize that CS has a demo, so you can see if you like the game mechanics at no cost.
