Also, I recommend playing either Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2 on GameCube, Super Monkey Ball Deluxe on the Xbox, or the hack Super Monkey Ball Deluxe in SMB2.
Super Monkey Ball Deluxe on the PS2 is the worst way to experience this content.
Visuals are also downgraded a little (reflections removed from stages, lower quality textures, etc.), though this doesn't matter nearly as much as the framerate and load times.
