What do the different colour stars mean?
What is the meaning of the silver/grey, gold and black stars in the current ability and potential ability tab.

Silver is youth team ability, gold is first team and black is the estimated potential (whether the player gets there depends on the player's determination, personality, game time and etc.). The number of stars is relative to your team's overall ability, e.g. a 3 stars player at PSG might be 4.5 stars at Saint-Etienne.

So if a player has 4 star potential but only a 1 determination stat, will that player then never reach his full potential?

Thanks for the help.

Keep in mind that stars is personal thinking of your scout on players current/potential abbility, on that scout stats it depends how well accurate stars will be but who knows. You don't have to 100% rely on stars

Determination and profesionalism (which is a hidden stat) effect how quickly a player will develop, so a 1 in determination is usually not the best, unless he has a Sporting personality, these players are best with determination bellow 5, my best player of all time (FM16) was like this.

I wish I knew this before signing a load of youth players with low determination. Practically all of the youth I've scouted has less than 4 determination, and I've not found a sporting personality yet.

Thank you for your help.

Put them in a mentoring group with someone that has a sporting personality. Over time their personalities change.
BLKCandy Oct 30, 2018 @ 8:11pm
Get high determination seniors to lead the mentoring groups will raise the determination of younger less influential players in the group.

And then there are hidden stats and personality like professionalism, and sportmanship which also can be mentored.

You might want a player with 'passable' ability but great determination and personality over a star player with conflicting personality which could be detrimental to your future stars.

Pretty much what everyone else had said. It's unlikely by itself, but not impossible, as there are ways to get around that.

In my experience, that only works on some occasions. Sometimes players with low determination or professionalism struggle to fit in and benefit little from any mentoring, especially if your team is already considered as 'highly professional' or 'highly determined'.

Like in previous FM, I find it useful to retain 1 or 2 older squad players who have strong influence in squad, mental skills and personality that can help with mentoring and/or supplement your squad rotation.

Determination and profesionalism
Ambition as well.
BLKCandy Oct 31, 2018 @ 2:09am
I always see ambition as a double edged sword. It make the player work harder, but also more likely to ask for new and better contract or transfer to bigger team which can be troublesome for smaller poorer team.

And I read somewhere that player with 'ambitious' personality on the profile also reflect low professionalism, which is bad. This doesn't mean ambition stat is bad, just the player that shows 'ambitious' in personality.

Player with both professionalism and ambition will show up with 'professional' personality. Though professional player can have low ambition as well.

So, just pile up determined professionals. Ambitious player doesn't make good mentor, but ambitious young player can be good. You can increase young player professionalism and determination through mentoring.

As for sportmanship, I'm not aware that it affects growth. I believe it just determine if that player like to gain unfair advantages like diving for fouls and such.

It's only 3 attributes that affect development - Determination, Ambition and Professionalism.
Ryan Oct 31, 2018 @ 5:28am
I now feel I have much better understanding of how players develop and grow so thank you all for your time , it's much appreciated.
