What does the General Manager do?

Is there a benefit to having one if you do everything manually?

He is the same as a football director. He can scout and broker deals with agents and staff. If you like doing all of this stuff yourself, you needn't waste the money. However, you can still have one and just use him for scouting.

Head Coaches in real life probably aren't as involved in which players come and go to and from the club as we are...

So it's less about what does a General Manager do?
and more like you're allowed to be the Head Coach AND the General Manager, if you want.

Very much depends on the club. Certain clubs the Manager does nothing except say he need an attacker, other clubs he says he wants a poacher and then at some clubs he'd say he needs a poacher that is quick and good with his feet and he will then look at the scouting reports and choose between a set amount of the best fits.
