Game crashes when clicking "Start Game"

Updated drivers, still crashes.

I did, i tried windowed, borderless, full screen... different resolutions and different languages and nothing worked. It's just borked beyond salvaging in my world.

Try to play at the lowest resolution and see if it start first. Also are you doing new install, new steam folder or from another drive?
Make sure window OS is updated, reinstall all vcredists versions, reinstall all version of directx, re-install framework and java.
I think window OS without new update did give some problems for game.

New install on new machine. I'm not jumping through hoop after hoop just for one game, not even ROTK. If Fallout, Age of Wonders, Europa Universalis, Civ, Rimworld, Darkest Dungeon, Subnautica, StarCraft II, etc. can work on my machine at the highest settings, and a turn based game can't - then the problem isn't my machine. Like I said... this won't work in my world, so I'll just fall back to one of the other 11 or 12 ROTKs that do work.
