All partner digimon are permanently chosen beforehand. For the character you're playing it's always Agumon. Gatomon, Biyomon, Gabumon and Renamon can be catched during free battles though. So yes, you have party and turn-based strategic combat on a grid field.
The so-called HP support equipment is a single crystal that generates a little bit of health each turn. Useful, but not game breaking. Generally you will find more than enough food or medicine to never run out of healing.
Also its Final Form is one of those Digimon Knight guys that they showed as something super special in some games and I think in the Anime as well.
but thats pretty much it ... I guess most people properly hardly use the extra Mons anyways except for fights where you can't have your friends digimons with you.
WarGrowlmon and Dukemon/Gallantmon have very powerful AoE attacks, and even WarGrowlmon's regular attack is a small AoE.
Guilmon is not required, but you play on playing the game early enough to get him, you might as well use him.
