Building your ship well and quickly is the game. Try to get cannons across the entire front of the ship to protect against meteors and pirates and so that you don't get hit in conflict zones. Try to get enough engines that you won't have the lowest speed, being fastest is an advantage but often it's not critical. Don't have exposed connectors on the outside of the ship. Use tiles that have connectors on all sides to ensure half your ship doesn't fall off. If you choose to add double engines, double cannons or shields make sure you have enough batteries to power them enough times to get value.

Obviously it's not possible to do all of that and that's where the game play comes in. If you can build a relatively crappy ship very quickly the other players may have real wrecks. Some people can't build under time pressure and going fast will cause them to make mistakes.

Watch what components your opponents are returning to the pile and plan ahead. If there are parts you know you will use later put them in your stash.

Use the ability to look at the upcoming cards to determine what challenges you might face. Lots of cargo holds won't help if you lose all three tests in a war zone. If you know there is a pirate that requires 8 cannons then either try to get all the way there or take less cannons and less engines in the hope one of your opponents will deal with them while you hoover up cheap cargo. Four blue crates are just as good as one red if you have plenty of space.

HivemindX pretty much said it all. Here is my two cents.

Always look at the deck and prioritize your build around the deck. For instance, no need to separate crew quarters if no epidemic cards in play. If there are a lot of cargo planets, prioritize cargo space.

If you can afford it, get the physical game and play with ship building.

That's all I have to add.

Also don't forget that you see only 3/4 of full deck as forecast so there is always a chance for something.
