I've launched the game multiple times, with and without the folder, and while the game assets return, the AI-Upscaling is embedded into the animated cutscenes and look terrible. The most reliable way to retain the original look of the game is to down-patch as OP did.
But that would be too convenient, and players are too complacent in terms of allowing negative changes. Like how everyone laughed at overpriced DLC Skins when it was new, but now that seems simple in comparison.
I prefer the AI upscaled textures (i have not watched the movies) and new font, but the thing about PC gaming is people should be able to enjoy it the way they want that's why we have the ability to make modifications and do stuff like down patch (Though most of the time it has to be done through steam console) as nice as it would to have new/old options I don't really see NIS touching this after today (but we never know)
At least it seems like an easy fix for the textures in this case
Also if someone converts the old movies to new files they can upload them on moddb or gamebanana or nexus for others if they wish so other people can just file replace.
gl all gamers. But there you can now get old everything and keep QoL
