It's their IP, they are not going to give them away for free.
Besides, that Player 2 youtuber showed an ad from Yager looking for producers to create a massive sci-fi MMO... so they may want to reuse the assets... AGAIN.

They probably can't legally release the code. It's not as simple as dumping it on a repository. Odds are, they have a lot of libraries and stuff purchased and licensed from third parties that they would have to manually go through and strip out, after which, the code wouldn't even work anymore without extensive coding. It's that effort to remove all that code that is a non-starter.

Nothing wrong with reusing the assets. Tons of devs, from indie to AAA, constantly do this. It's smart. The Cycle didn't die because they had ♥♥♥♥ graphics or ♥♥♥♥ maps or ♥♥♥♥ artistic direction. It died because of bad game design and poor financial expertise in the live-service genre.

If they can make a new game in this universe and focus on appealing to another audience than the hardcore extraction shooter niche, they could eventually get a hit. It's much better to try and find what you're good at using your foundations, than rebuilding completely anew.

I totally agree: they said that they couldn't make a peer-to-peer version, but I think, that it is only because they would probably need to change a lot of networking code, which could probably take weeks, if not months. But handling the backend probably isn't very hard
