I have looked in the options screen. Is there a way to cut back on the amount of smoke in the Inn? I can barely see what is going on half the time.

You cannot influence the guests' need for smoking. This is one of the biggest flaws in the game. There is a need for smoking, but it is impossible to satisfy this need. The game lacks the necessary recipes: ”Herb Pipe Joint”, “Ash Joint”. You can fire all smokers and only hire non-smokers. This will help a little. You can completely disable the need for guests to smoke through the console. Open the console in the game (Alt + ~), type the NeedLock ("Smoke") command and click on the Run button.

I don't care if they smoke or not, I just want to cut back the smoke in the room. Gets so full, I can't see to click on anything.

Smoke in the room from smoking. The only way to reduce smoke in a room is to reduce the number of smokers. There is no other way. It is not possible to adjust the intensity of the smoke in the room. This is not provided by the game.

never mind the obvious quibble. The game seems to be a mid late medieval tavern well before tobacco was introduced from the new world.
