Interesting. By shortening their route you mean just putting it in the same larger kitchen? Is it only a few steps away instead of several now? Would a doorway and wall make that much difference if the shelf is the same distance away from the cauldron?
Does it appear to increase the dirtiness in the kitchen having drudges bringing goods through?
yes putting the shelves in the kitchen near the kitchen ware/boiler etc. so the way from storage to the kitchen utensils is short.my kitchen is clean. so it doesn't inrease the dirtiness for me.
the steps are much shorter. putting all the shelves in another room/storage room will make their way longer. the npc's have to go through doorways and halls. the KI in this game is not that good for now. their blocking their ways for each other or get stuck in narrow ways.
and it's good to put the barrels near your bar/counter. so serving liquor to your guests is also faster by shortening the way to get it ready. the npc's aren't quite optimiced now. so you have to find a work around.
2, The small wood holder only holds fire wood. The shed holds both. Currently there seems to be no limit for either.
3. They store different objects and with different limits. A barrel can hold fish, for example, a shelf can not. Barrels can hold a single type of item with a stack of up to 60.
4. No see above.
5. I believe it depends on the counter. But storage seems to be around 60 mugs or plates. Keep in mind that mugs on the table, in the washer, or reserved for prepared dishes are not counted. So you can effectively have hundreds of mugs in circulation even with limited storage.
6. Yes you can put shelves in the kitchen. I honestly see little reason to have a seperate storeroom, except for security. Putting storage directly in the kitchen seems the most efficient.
1. Thanks glad to know what I thought might be obvious was correct.
2. I was pretty certain that the small one held firewood inside for the kitchen items, but it is good to get confirmation and also to learn both the wood and firewood fits in the shed.
3. I have not bought fish yet, so that might have taken me a while to learn. Thanks
4. gotcha I just need to remember to customize each one when placing it.
5.As far as I can tell I only want mugs in mine, since I'll have a shelf in the kitchen for clean plates. But knowing the cap number will allow me to plan for how many customers can have a drink at one time. (Without shelf storage for back-up clean mugs.
6. I've read about issues with security and cleanliness and frankly I've got some OCD issues so I might have to have a "storeroom". But I also do see and feel the need to have *certain* ingredients kept in the kitchen. I'll have to sit down and make a list of things that get stored in one and not the other (in my inn). But then again too, I might feel the need to make "hot" and "cold" and "wet" and "dry" storage locations. Meat for example, should probably not be stored on a shelf in the kitchen. I need to consider the mushroom storage 'room' too maybe?
More questions for all.
7. I saw a youtube video where a chest looked like it contained an infinite amount of storage for bread. Is this still a thing?
8. Are sacks the same as chests and barrels, just different items available?
9. Is Ice for keeping stored food longer?
10. How often do you limit your shelve's storing items. Do you set each shelf specifically and adjust when need be , or do you pretty much just build shelves and let the workers sort it all out?
11. How does water storage work with a well? I think I have been building a well outside and placing a water barrel inside. And when I look at my stocks without ever having bought water, my stored amounts are ridiculously high. Over 400 stored water. Is this what my workers are all doing instead of serving and cleaning? Running to get water all the time? How do you set up water collection for washing dishes and recipe ingredients so that it doesn't overwhelm the workers? Is it just bugged or am I missing something?
Production buildings/devices have infinite storage for their output. So while it's not possible to have infinite bread in a box or on a shelf. You can have infinite bread in the bread oven if you produce like mad. One thing to keep in mind is items in a production device do not count as inventory. It has to be taken out and put into proper storage before it counts as inventory. So workers can't just take bread from the oven and serve it directly.
Sacks are nonfunctional and only work as decor. Boxes/crate are functional and work like barrels.
Ice is for larders. The larder will not function for storage until ice is added first. Ice needs it's own storage. You must either put it in a dugout or a box/crate. Ice is permanent, and currently does not melt or need to be replenished.
I personally prefer to customize all my shelves. And I put shelves where needed. So I have shelves just for hops out by the breweries. Shelves for wax for candle production. Small storage closets tucked about the inn for storing candles and non food storage. So my kitchen only has food storage. As you inn grows a single main store room just isn't workable. Small closets on each floor will have your workers walking less.
Water barrels are critical. You can survive without a well by just importing water. But having a well without water storage will lead to problems. Fires will happen and you will want water close by to deal with them. Another use for those small storage closets. Water for washers is less vital. Once they are filled with water them seem to be filled indefinitely.
As far as water inventory it seems glitched. The count seems meaningless and often shows more stored then you have capacity to hold.
Using the smallest stacks up first automatically should be a thing. Or at least giving us the ability to consolidate partial stacks manually. If I'm running into this already with 2 food items on my menu I don't want to think about the storage nightmare a larger inn would be dealing with.
Looks like they've done a pretty good job of cleaning up bugs since the messy release. Maybe they can get to some QoL fixes like this now...
Keep the shelves with food closest to the stoves etc. Put a dishwasher close to the shelves you pick for dirty dishes, mugs and plates. The shelves for candles etc in the back. Barrels for alcohol next to the bar and barrels for dry food in the garden or kitchen.
Larders with ice is a luxury later in game in my opinion. You can do well with a couple of dugouts for a long time. Just make sure you only store meat, cheese milk etc in them and not mugs, herbs or any dry food.
Q1. I see when checking the storage options of Shelves they say 9/20. Does this mean they will hold up to 9 different types of items (and hold 20 of each?)
YES -- all 9 slots may have different items in them and you will be able to see that
(There may be some restricitons in other items , so make sure to check the inventory:
As a rule 1 slot may house only one kind of item - therefore a barrel with 1x60 will only hold one kind of liquid with up to 60units while a pile of crates with 3x80 will hold 3 different things with up to 80 units each; Restricitions often are related to the kind of item:
-woodshack will only allow wood and firewood
-some crates only allow limited varietys of iems
-some barrels only allow liquids
etc. )
(I still do recommend using only one storage-item per ingredient in order to control the amount of things better; You can restrict what can be stored through the inventory; It has the practical benefit that storage space for rare items will not be blocked by ingredients that you overproduce)
Q2. How much firewood does the firewood storage building hold, and will it hold wood as well?
Yes it can hold both and will also offer 9 slots to store them in (9x100); As soon as you have a chopping stump the priority to chop wood will lead to the situation that all wood will be chopped to firewood - so if you really want to stack wood you should either stop firewoodproduction or restrict the woodshed to only take in Wood - therefore it might(!) be that wood will only be chopped if firewood is needed in other places like stoves. As I said before: the usage of items will very much depend on how you set up production chains and workflow
there is a Bug with Fireplaces - so don´t use them or all your firewood will be stacked there unlimited)
Q3. What is the difference between barrels for storage and shelves?
No diffence game mechanic but different storage limitations
- as said before check the inventory - every item has restrictions on what and how much it can hold
There are barrels with 1x80 = 1 slot for 80units of one ingredient
There are stacks of barrels with 6x40 = 6 slots for 6 ingredients with 40 units each
There is the water barrell with 1x60 = 1 slot with only water allowed
I will not write down every ingredient for every item -- CHECK THE INVENTORY!!!!
Q4. I see people setting one barrel to wine and another to lager, can both ale and lager be stored in the same barrel at the same time? How much capacity does a barrel have?
Check the inventory! If you click on an item you will see a lookingglass with "About" - it will tell you "Ressources (9x20)" or "Ressources (1x80)"
There will also be a symbol called "storage settings" where you can check what ingredients are allowed in there. You can restrict the ingredients that are beeing stored under "Storage settings" - You can do this for every barrel or crate or shelf separately and thus very effectively influence what ingredient will be stored where in your
INN
Q5. How many mugs will store under the counter/bar?
I know I repeat myself but: check the inventory -- I have a bar with 4x20 and - surprise surprise - you can restrict if it stores mugs, dirty mugs, plates and dirty plates or all of them together. So the basic concept for storage Is still the same.
q6. Does designating a storage room vs keeping ingredients in the kitchen have any effect on the game?
YES and NO - YES it will have large impacts on Your game. And no the game itself does not care! What I mean by that is: If your worker has to walk through 5 rooms to get one pint of Ale - it will need longer time and therefore your guests might be upset. Find a setup for your storage items that will make you happy
In my inn I use shelfes for Mugs within my main hall, and a separate storage for all the kitchen items and I have a winecellar to store larger quantities of liquids although i have a fast barrel for every drink in my main hall. (Beside the inventory of storage items you should also consider decoration values and time needed for using it - check the items symbols and descriptions)
I hope this is helpful. I´m sorry if it sounds a bit sarcastic at some points - but really every item has its own purpose and therefore the inventory, storage Settings and item-information should be read and considered carefully for each!
