1701 Spanish War crashes to menu

Any time you press end turn, the game turn won't load and crashes to the menu and says generating AI. What gives?

Which Windows version are you on?
Are you using Windows "compatibility mode"? You should.
Did you start the game 'as Administrator'? You should.

Crashes of AGEOD games are as old and common as the games themselves. The Matrix/AGEOD forums are full of threads about issues.

Win10 (and Linux WINE!) - for me - are quite okay, running these games, though occasional hickups are possible and unsolved 'known issues' are still being unsolved.

What I also like to do is drop the complete game into a RAMDisk while playing. Helps with the loading times and turn speeds (or, I like to imagine, it helps). I also restrict the game to using only 1 CPU thread (not sure, if I have to do this, neither, since the engine is single-core only anyway and Windows Kernel Scheduler manages game thread(s)).
