Did you start the game 'as Administrator'? You should.
Crashes of AGEOD games are as old and common as the games themselves. The Matrix/AGEOD forums are full of threads about issues.
Win10 (and Linux WINE!) - for me - are quite okay, running these games, though occasional hickups are possible and unsolved 'known issues' are still being unsolved.
What I also like to do is drop the complete game into a RAMDisk while playing. Helps with the loading times and turn speeds (or, I like to imagine, it helps). I also restrict the game to using only 1 CPU thread (not sure, if I have to do this, neither, since the engine is single-core only anyway and Windows Kernel Scheduler manages game thread(s)).
