And then there's the Life is Strange franchise, it's different gameplay, but similar narrative vibe:

I already have most of these on my wishlist, but they are not really giving me the same vibe as "What Never Was" does.
But, yes, they are similar regarding the riddle aspects and world-style.
Maybe one day I'll try out some of these - perhaps they won't match my first impression and I'll like them more than I thought.
Thanks for your input, Kenpoleon Bonaparte.
There is no need to call someone else "silly" here.
I saw you in other discussions with a similar "attitude".
Please, be kind; it's not like Kenpoleon Bonaparte's post was some sort of attack - it was simply a note. - yes, that
can be interpreted as harsh, but I didn't see it that way.
Don't make a big fuzz out of something small.
I don't want a verbal fight in any of my discussions - especially not in one about game recommendations. Opinions differ, recommendations differ.
This message is not meant offensive in any way either - it's just a reminder to be friendly around others. This would help immensely.
If you got a few more games, Kenpoleon Bonaparte. Feel free to post your recommendations here.
You referred to a "latter game" - which one did you mean?
Silly isn't exactly an insult, it's a gentle reminder that he wasn't adding any suggestions of his own, which comes off as a bit silly to me.
"I don't like your answer, but I don't have anything better to suggest" is to put it politely, a silly response.
If I was going to be rude about it I'd have used much harsher language. Stop looking for reasons to be offended by nothing.
EDIT: And before you try to twist this further, try looking up what the word means:
https://www.google.com/search?q=silly+definition&rlz=1C1CHZL_enUS954US954&oq=silly+defin&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUqDAgAEAAYRhj5ARiABDIMCAAQABhGGPkBGIAEMgYIARBFGDkyBwgCEAAYgAQyBwgDEAAYgAQyBwgEEAAYgAQyBwgFEAAYgAQyBwgGEAAYgAQyCAgHEAAYFhgeMggICBAAGBYYHjIICAkQABgWGB7SAQk1MTUwajBqMTWoAgywAgHxBaB1rj0ml5St&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
When you're going to tell me you disagree (which my first word was: great, as in, you're engaging, let's go, let's carry on the discussion) but then post no suggestions of your own: That is "lacking seriousness"
You want to engage? Great, disagree (that's not impolite), now make some suggestions and carry on. It's not a serious response (thus silly) to truncate the response with just a negative while not providing a tangent of your own as counterpoint.
Excuse me for attempting polite conversation.
That's you looking for reasons to be offended, because all I did was provide a list (which is what you asked for)
I shouldn't have to explain why I'm answering your question. Would you prefer to be ignored? (seriously) What I expected was for more people to make their own suggestions. Instead all I get is negatives from both of you.
And a reminder: my first post stayed on topic. This isn't a tangent I started.
The latter game = 'What Never Was'.
Your first post asked for games similar to "using a stone as a tool to see another world", I interpreted your post as also wanting the second criteria of a good story to go along with that.
I don't know of a game that fits both criteria. However, games I know that fit one of your two criteria...
1. . Puzzles. Other worlds/dreams/realities.

I apologize for my harsh reply then.
I completely forgot that "silly" can be used in a less insulting way as well.
Perhaps I did interpret similar messages in other discussions as jokey insults as well - I apologize for not understanding your way of expressing yourself correctly. I do understand now.
I thought you were up to start something after you replied to the other post. You did stay on topic beforehand.
Thanks for the very detailed explanation and reminder that "silly" can be used in several ways with several intentions - I only had the worse one in mind when I read your reply to Kenpoleon Bonaparte.
I misunderstood and simply overreacted, because of my interpretation.
I guess I saw too many discussions going down the river with people replying with similar messages over and over again.
I apologize once again for my overreaction. I thought you meant it in an offensive way and I wanted to step in.
I hope this is solved now and I won't interfere anymore regarding this :)
Thanks a lot.
These are great additions - I didn't see many of these yet.
Thanks a lot, guys!
Note: I didn't play any of these yet - I cannot say how close they are to "What Never Was".
But in case someone who stumbles to this discussion, here are a few games with a few similar tags which caught my interest. My "is related to "What Never Was" because" is mostly linked to the game featuring some kind of notebook or sketches, which help understanding the world or game mechanics....
I think "What Never Was" is very unique - and style and elements are not featured very often.
The following list only showcases a list of games you may look into if you liked "What Never Was" - they may or may not be similar with it.
Riddles + world immersion:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/210970/The_Witness/
More a walking simulator with less riddles, but it has some sci fi traveling in it; and many sketches of creatures:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/962630/Transient_Extended_Edition/
The trailer and pictures depict a very beautiful world related to fantasy and mystic:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/377480/NERO_Nothing_Ever_Remains_Obscure/
And a game I keep an eye on for quite a while, because of it's unique way of presenting game mechanics by an encrypted "language". Interesting riddle concept:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/553420/TUNIC/
Story-focused; probably not really close to "What Never Was":
More platformer, but interesting story about a family bond (and magic, maybe):
https://store.steampowered.com/app/278360/A_Story_About_My_Uncle/
One which may showcase a magical world with some sci fi stuff, but is probably very different and may have not-so-relaxing in-game areas:
