As far as preludes goes, admittedly Clarissa's prelude is by far the most interesting and is worth the experience; its definitely the most interesting thing about Preludes. Renee is a close second.
I'd advise playing the main game first and if you find yourself engrossed with it and its characters, then play Preludes to satisfy your curiosity to learn more about their personal lives, and also find out where the [Plot Device] came from.
