I didn't take multiple samples to see if prices fluctuate, but I did take a quick survey of all the races that trade with me and looked at their margins and converted them to a constant currency.
I'm not sure how much is randomized between games, over time, or based on stocks or influenced by friendship levels, so take this all with a grain of salt.
The Ulooquo trade at the tighhtest margins, between 6-10% except for titanium which they have a huge markup on.
Araona are generally the best to sell resources to. With the exception of C-60, which you get a better price for at the Citadel.
Tyncoeden are generally the best to buy resources from. With the exception of C-60 at Ulooquo and Platinum at Vanderi, their prices are the best.
Now, if you change your common currency to Titanium, the story changes a bit. In that case, Tyncoeden is the best place to sell most things, and Ulooquo is the best place to buy.
So it really depends on what resource you are looking to trade for what. Assuming the numbers I observed don't change very much, there will be a best place to go for each exchange. Of course, there are like 56 different combinations of possible transactions, each of which would have a different optimal merchant.
So really the only good tip I have is to sell whatever you have extra of and not worry about it too much. I always found myself needing to buy more Titanium, and only sometimes other things.
Trade circles have always been good, and they exist, here.
Prices and price spread (difference buy-sell price) depend on the amount of stock the partner has - I have also discovered this.
Here is an easy example for profit:
An example from today, where I changed the currency of a trade partner into the currency of another trade partner - and back. Might also be possible with more than two partners.
1. Uluocoo: 75 platinum -> bought 750 titanium for a course of 0,099
2. Citadel: 750 titanium -> bought 177 platinum for a course of 4,234
Nothing else has changed, but I got 177 platinum for 75. That is clear profit. And both partners were in one system.
If you look at courses: 10/4,234 = 2,361.
75*2,34 =177
More than twice the invested.
Another example with two partners is buying Gold vs. Platinum with Saurid/Ulooquo when both courses are <1. These partners are available early.
Gaining ressources via trading is valuable, if exploitable planets get rare.
My tip: Trade the trading currencies of your partners back and forth and make profit. Like above,
Rule of thumb: Divide the price of the offered good by the value of their reserve currency at your reference. If the result is higher than the price for buying it, you can sell it at your reference with profit.
Using another method with a somewhat more detailed explanation:
Write down the prices for the different "markets" (e,g, one of the races) and use something central as a point of reference (I took the Citadel because of the Nexus gate nearby and the nice added bonus of havoking the asteroid field every trip there).
Therefore I am using Titanium as my point of reference / currency reserve,
Multiply the price of a good at a market with the value of the used currency in your reference market.
Either
a) use the value for Sell to compare it to the "baseline value" of simply selling the currency goods or
b) use the value for Buy to simulate some sort of conversion (e.g. from Titanium to Platinum to Adamantine).
Assuming you already have the required goods (enough reserve currency) to buy the good without selling anything:
1 Adamantine is sold for 8,7 Platinum, this converts into 8,7 * 4,3 = 37,41 Titanium.
[8,7 * 3,5 = 30,45 when using a)]
Therefore it is profitable to buy the Adamantite for Platinum (when bought at the Citadel) and sell it at the Citadel.
I would not advice to use Titanium at the Uloquoo to buy Adamantine because the Platinum needed equals selling ~ 97 Titanium (97 * 0,09 = 8,73)
The values are just from one game, as Luke said, I have no idea how much those vary. There may also be some typos within the names. I hope you are able to cope with both my English and the "structure" within this answer.
Not sure if intended this way: If you do not want to take into account the research you need to give them for trading, the Vanderi are a very nice market to sell. Almost everything, actually. Especially the one within the Citadel system. Since you offer them tech only once while within the same system, this allows for some nice profit at the Citadel, Look for Chiralite to sell (around 1,4 Cobalt 60 per unit / 4,6 Titanium @ Citadel). and sell the Cobalt 60 at the Citadel (around 7-8 Titanium). Converted to Titanium you are actually getting ~ 10 Titanium per unit of Chiralite sold. Buy Chiralite, sell at the Vanderi outside and so on....
