Stuck - unable to research
I think I'm stuck just before the end of the game.

I'm at the point when I need to create a warp shock, but I never researched that tech because it didn't seem interesting. Now I don't have enough research to get it.

I scoured the internet for sources of research, but I think I've done everything. I event went to the Citadel three or four times and destroyed all the respawning asteroids to see if there was anything more I could get from those. I've exhausted all dialogue options with every alien faction. I wandered the dark nebula locating planetoids and fighting the people there, but never found any anomalies to investigate, and never got any research from those battles.

Perhaps the Lumae could randomly give research points when you defeat their ships, with a supply that never runs out?

I figure at this point I'm simply stuck, and have to reload an earlier save.

I kinda got in the same situation, i managed to grab some research from one of the massive derelicts debris on my first try after citadel meteors failing me quite a few times

gotta catch those probes zipping around. some give quite a bit research points. And did you find the planet with the telescope? I think it's position is random, but you can go there every now and then for more research points (should still have the unsolved-symbol on the star map).
I think I was able to research every bit of tech by the end of the game. Did you maybe miss a planet cluster? For example, did you find the birds?

I think the asteroid research events repeat don't they? If you repeatedly clear the field around the Citadel you should get some Research eventually.

Yeah just ran into this. Warp shock seemed like a bad idea, was worried about friendly fire so I never researched it.

Farming asteroids worked fine, just took a couple clears

There are several places with asteroids - just don't go back immediately, travel for a bit between farming sessions and use Nexuses (Nexi? XD). You can also try going back to Kite Station, saving, loading the save and then going back to farm asteroids. I can't confirm if reloading will have an effect, but it resets some other stuff, so it might work. There are enough research points to do almost all the upgrades if you 85-90% the game. Unless warp shock is your last remaining upgrade, you shouldn't have such a hard time finding some points.

Other things to do:
- complete pending side quests
- complete pending (possible) achievements
- catch swarm drones
- catch comets
- trade tech with the Vanderi
- find seeds and debris in deep space, although this somewhat depends on luck
- if you've fixed the Telescope you might want to go back there
- explore the nebulas; especially the lightning one around the black sphere

I had none of those things left and farming asteroids for small amounts of points sounded really boring.

You can edit the save file and just give yourself the points. 9999 seemed to be the max.

"quantity": 9999,
"CommodityName": "RESEARCH POINTS"
