Dance contest at The Hole?

I guess I'm missing something obvious here as nobody else has posted about this, but what am I supposed to do to start the dance contest? I can go to the dance floor and light up tiles but can't find any clues about what I'm supposed to be lighting up. I've tried lighting everything up all three colours but still nothing has triggered.

look at the pattern flashing before you go on the dancefloor, then reproduce them

There are two, do I do both? What about the empty squares, I don't get how to leave those uncoloured. Are they supposed to be red?

you just need to reproduce the whole pattern.
If I remember correctly, there was four sequences, you need to put them on a paper, and think how to obtain this exact image without going out of the dancefloor.
Uncolored must stay uncolored, blue needs one or four passage, green two, and red three

OK, the penny's dropped now, I was thinking that it was flashing two different patterns that I had to create separately (which would be impossible), not two parts of the same one! Thanks Kainkenny.
