WHY ARE THE CONTROLS SO DIFFERENT TO EA'S SKATE?!
look, pretty much every single person buying this game is going to be a huge fan of Skate. my question is why are the controls so odd, different and overly complicated? triggers to turn? seriously? why are the tricks so awkwardly complicated aswell? you literally have to use most of the controller to pull off the most simplest of tricks and it just feels so awkward. EA's controls for Skate were PERFECT. the controls on that game actually gave a very close resemblance to the footwork of the tricks themselves and the flow of these controls were perfect. why did you guys have to make it so complicated? its not a bad thing to copy them. if it aint broke dont fix it right? look at all the fps shooters out there, all the controls on all of the games are the same no matter what game it is. why did you guys have to throw the controls all over the place for this game? the game looks great btw and the movement is spot on.

edit: to the children on this thread trying to explain to me that these new controls are more realistic or “authentic” to that of an actual skater you are wrong. i’ve been a skater for over 10 years now and Skate’s flick controls resembled the footwork of the actual tricks perfectly. lay down the control patterns on an actual skateboard and the foot movement would follow it almost identically. for example; a heeflip (if pushing goofy) shoots off with a diagonal left upwards flick, the exact same way your front foot would in real life. an inward heeflip shoots off in inward diagonal left flick, exactly how your front foot would in real life. you can’t get more authentic than that. period. also to the people saying Skate’s controls are “too easy”; Skate’s controls only became “easy” after hours upon hours of practice. i remember have to practice for hours learning how to tre flip, and would still often fail it from time to time. i know this isn’t a Skate game but that doesn’t mean any ideas implemented from it should be blasphemous. there’s a reason why that game killed the Tony Hawk franchise, and i think it’s pretty niave to not appreciate why.

edit: 20/9/19 turns out the controls arent that bad lol, still clunky but getting used to them.

I think you have to understand that this isn't EA Skate. As for this game, once you get used to the controls, its actually better than Skate's control scheme. I too was frustrated at first, but when you play for a little bit, everything starts to feel natural . It less difficult than it seems

We actually said this since the first demo and the devs never listened so i doubt this will change anything, they want to make their own thing for better or worse.

Turning on triggers has NEVER been in a control scheme, ever. There is a reason for that. Joysticks have controlled the character for over 20 years. There's a reason for that. Using the triggers feels awkward and terrible to control.

I can't find the source unfortunately, but I remember a dev saying they can't use the EA Skate controls due to copyright. Be patient, you'll learn the controls in time :)

i either get the feeling that they just wanted to do their own thing or just didnt know how to follow Skate's controls scheme. it just doesnt make sense for me. the controls on Skate were what made that game a masterpiece, yet it seems to be the only thing the devs chose not to take into consideration.. its like playing a Call of Duty game and replacing the trigger button to shoot with the analog stick button.... ehh i just dont get it.

really? that sounds to ridiculous lol that's messed up if it is true. then why arent Battlefield suing Call of Duty since both those games share the same controls?

just get used to it its not bad i love skate series but i love this type of controls to be honest skate felt limited at times here you have the freedom to do the tricks if you are patient like in real life

Because they wanted to make a skate sim lol, sims for skating will not work. I think the game will flop as it low sales because of it.

You can't copyright a control scheme. They could have literally made a copy-paste Skate game if they wanted to. It doesn't run on the same code so it's free reign. The problem is that going from analog when you're off-board to using triggers when on-board and then having to reverse this logic depending on what stance you land in becomes overly tedious. It feels as if you're playing a complex fighting game. It's a beautiful ugly.

But you also have to remember games used to shoot using the X button, and accelerate in cars with X and so on. Hell even skate was a "weird" mechanic when it first came out. It was weird, new, and took getting used to. We are adaptable and I'm sure if the game is good, we can learn some new controls.

Skating is too challenging for a small dev. This game is a nice experiment but after trying it out, it doesn't add anything that Skate 3 doesn't do.

LOL this game isnt for fans of EA Skate, its for fans of SKATEBOARDING. If you actually skateboard and play the game, the controls make more sense than any skate game to date. your as good as the amount of time you put into practicing the tricks and movements.....oh wow KINDA LIKE REAL SKATEBOARDING! WHO WOULDA THOUGHT!

Having each joystick as a foot is the most comprehensive way ive seen skate controls done. EA Skate is like your grandmother is holding your hand while doing each trick.

That sounds like a super obnoxious control scheme....I was just about to buy it but now I'll pass, at least for now

I mean I kind of get if the devs wanted to try something new, but it looks like we're never getting a Skate 4 and hell, we've never even had a Skate game on PC. There was a big void they could've filled without having to reinvent the wheel.

I hope they do well regardless but I'm really thinking these controls are not for me.
Green OG Sep 17, 2019 @ 6:42am
Maybe I was wrong about the copyright thing? but personally I don't think this is that big of a deal. I agree the controls don't feel "right", but I've also spent 10+ years playing Skate and I've spent thousands of hours playing those games. This is a big transition for me too. Session's system makes sense (in theory) and isn't TOO dissimilar to Skate, you're just using 2 sticks for fliptricks instead of 1. It'll take some time and a little bit of brainpower but I'm looking forward to learning the game.
