go to steam settings
controller
general controller settings
check the box for "guide button focuses on steam" and "playstation configuration support". uncheck anything else.
then, start the game from steam big picture mode
when the game loads and you're at the main menu
press the "PS" button on your controller to bring up the big picture overlay
go to controller configuration
then go to browse configs
check the community configs
choose "gamepad with camera controls" or one that has lots of playtime/votes
apply
done
you only have to launch the game from big picture mode this one time to browse and apply different configs.
once its applied, you can launch the game without big picture mode and your config will be saved.
hope this helps.
that tool used to be the defacto way to use a DS4 controller. but steam has built in native support now, and DS4Windows can cause problems with some games while using Steam. it will register dual inputs for FarCry 5 for example. (it sees both the DS4 controller, and the emulated x360 controller)
i still use DS4Windows for games outside of Steam, games bought on a different store front or emulators.
Most of the times I have no problems using DS4 windows, even with games steams warns me about using it when I start the game.
I tend to use DS4Windows for everything if only because it's hassle free and I don't have to worry beforehand if it's supported by Steam or not. In the case of session, I've never encountered any problems.
ive ran into this issue personally, as you can see many others have as well.
from the dev of DS4Windows:
https://github.com/Jays2Kings/DS4Windows/issues/26
"Build 10074 sometimes frees the controller, however like Build 9879 it's the system grabbing the controller, and there is no fix from my end, only Microsoft's."
there is a convoluted work around, but its method of executing is not very casual user friendly.
DS4Windows has its uses, but if your playing on steam, might as well use steam's native Dual Shock support without installing additional software.
Would have to test if the "hide" option is working in his branch.

Many thanks, sir. The hide option does seem to be working more appropriately on his branch; DS4Windows settings take precedence, but Big Picture is fully functional.
Be aware that while switching from the old version to Ryochan7's, my controller's driver was disabled, causing it to flash a yellow light and be unresponsive. Going to the device manager and re-enabling "HID-Compliant Game Controller" resolved that issue, and it's working fine now.
