Session already feels like a finished game. Object dropper is fun to play around. Character customization is better than SXL. Graphics and animations are better, it has day and night cycle. You can get off your board, walk etc.
Skater XL didn't receive updates for 10 months but it received a big update (beta) finally thanks to Session. Most of the new features are actually mods made by community. I believe the guy who made the replay system is now part of the developer team. So, if you want better mod support (there is already a big community) and gameplay closer to EA's Skate franchise, buy Skater XL.
If I have to choose one, I'd buy Session.
real skaters are out skating, not gating keeping a video game. It's a video game you play with a controller.. unless you're playing with VR glasses and a tech deck.. shove the "this is close to skateboarding" crap and the other is "arcady".. If a controller is involved at all it's NOTHING close to skateboarding.
Session has more options for you to tinker with in terms of how your board handles and how you want to play, though it is still early access, grinding is a pain with glitches. But the world is bigger and the soundtrack really livens it up, helps you to forget the glitches.
I own both, but after the first two hours of handling the new controls, I'm largely playing this one right now. (Session)
Here's the paste :
Skater XL - West Coast spots (La Courthouse, Encinitas park), better grind and rotation mechanics atm. grabs are in the public beta and works like it should, really good support for mods turning it almost infinite in possibilities. Can't get off the skate
Session - Can get off the skate, walk and jump, NY Spots (Brooklyn Banks), potential for a much better and open world map, the current map is amazing with a lot of possibilities, better flip controls with a lot of control options to change, customization is better too (female skaters, various board format and sizes, better engine, animations, graphics and lightning (UE4, XL uses Unity wich is ok), day and night cycle, object dropper and better replay editor (wich is a little broken atm but already feels more "professional"), daily, weekly and historical challenges with money reward (wich in the future can be used to buy new gear and decorate your apartment)
they added 2 of the most active modders to the team and integrated stuff from mods.
