I was playing normal version of Little Nightmares II.
weirdness!
I then closed the game, re-opened it, and started level 3 over. just to be on the safe side I tried the thing of holding Six's hand as much as possible going through the level. All toys had respawned, I burned the correct toy and got the key.
I'm inclined to think that closing & restarting the game had more to do with getting by the bug than holding hands, but there's no way for me to know that for sure, obviously.
