how does online coop work in this?

Is this viable to play with randoms? Or is it similar to valheim where its better to play it with friends?
Do we create our own open/closed hosted servers as we wish? And is this properly supported by the game? Details really matter here.

I really wonder why Steam doesnt have a catergory co-op with friends by now. Thats a MAJOR difference to general coop. And most coop games nowadays only really work properly with friends

it's viable once you unlock some decent starter packs, otherwise you'll better stick with friends who already know the game. otherwise you'll get the usual noob, the one that does nothing but afk at spawn, and the one who actually tries to help but leaves once he figures nobody is doing anything.
