But hey, guess what. Supporting the game, keeps the game running. Imagine that.
They've stated that they have a road map out for 1 year. So they will continue to provide support for at least that long. But if the game gets supported, the game will keep going.
Thats online gaming for you. Welcome to the online gaming world.
To start off, ToM is a game that has been advertised as Multiplayer and Singleplayer play. Additionally, there is a big difference between an MMO and a game that has online play, as MMO games are their own unique genre of a game with multiplayer that people know going into purchasing the game. Since ToM has been advertised as a Singleplayer and Online Coop game, it is only fair that we don't classify ToM as an MMO. With this in mind, players are not (as far as I know) legally entitled to be able to play the game if the devs decide to discontinue support for the game.
That said, it is a bad thing that there is no confirmed offline play, as it should always be an option for someone who has bought a game to be able to play the game they purchased a licence to (again, over my depth on how legally "owning games" is online). It is somewhat similar to DRM titles and the public morals on that.
I am against demanding creators/devs to make something the way that others want it, but it would be a very welcome feature for players to be able to host a singleplayer world, or to be able to host their own via an independent service. It's more so a feature in online games that people have come accustomed to having, and a lack of it will create negative experiences for players, as people will have their own reasons for their concern on this topic.
Personally, I don't think it will affect my experience too much with the game, as I am perfectly fine with playing on their servers, but if I had an opinion on it, it would be the desire to be able to play the game x amount of years from now if I desire. I don't know the coding methods the devs employed to structure the game experience, but it would be something I would hope they would add into the game as one of it's final features as a way to give the reigns over to the players who supported & cherished their game (any time in development is fine, as long as it is viable for them to do so, although I personally wouldn't want the feature to disrupt the content development flow).
Another note is that servers that are exclusively developer owned can also succumb to lag, or disruption, as well as the inability to be modded (if that is something to be desired in the vision of the game).
Additionally, the game isn't even out yet, and the statement from the developer in the linked thread is vague, so for all we know this worry is all for naught.
Hey y'all! Just hopping on this thread to hopefully explain our vision a little better.
Yes, we host dedicated servers and they will come at no cost to you, as the game was designed to be an online multiplayer game from the start. We understand how important solo play is, and over the course of development, made sure a Solo mode was viable and as enjoyable as a multiplayer experience. We created a specially designed Solo Mode for this, which you will be able to play on launch.
Our Road Map explains how we plan to support the game for the next year, but that's just the beginning. We plan to support this game for as long as we possibly can, and community support of course will be paramount in that. We're proud to have built a great community so far, especially in our Discord.
The vision is to continuously push Mid-Saga (2 months) and Saga updates (4 months) to build upon the world of Tribes of Midgard, never taking away Seasonal content. That's always been our goal, to build upon what already exists.
So to sum up, though we have dedicated servers due to our online multiplayer aspect, please know we do plan to continue support for the game for a very long time! It's been our greatest passion these past 4 years, and we have no plans to stop now. :) I'm not sure if that puts your mind more at ease, but I hope it can at least a little!
Hello! My main concern with that is: How many servers you guys have arround the world. Will south america reicive any attention? The biggest reasons id like to self host is for me and friends to have a good experience regarding conection. It is not uncommon to see places like Brazil to be left out from global games like this.
Thus, Conan turns out to be an MMO game, a solo game, and a cooperative one.
Personally, I think this approach is ideal for a game of this genre.
O cara vai falar do Brasil?
Eu comprei a Deluxe Edition e pronto. Parem de mimi.
E olha que quem esta falando isso é uma pessoa que mora no submundo chamado Brasil.
At this day and age it doesnt really matters if an online game shuts down as long as there is that one passionate fan willing to spend hours on creating/emulating a private server for the game.
Not to mention this whole topic is pretty backwards(or extremely naive) way of thinking in 2021, where some of the most popular AAA titles that cost 60$ require internet connection while starting the game(some of them even needs constant connection). It is a really unfortunate situation but it is the norm now and it wont be changing anytime soon.
An example could be loot boxes, just because EA and Ubisoft put those in every other game, doesn’t mean it is something that everyone else is going to give up on, and let it spread everywhere.
I’ll admit it is a bit righteous/high road’ey, but just because there are a good number of non-steam games that require an internet connection to play, that doesn’t mean that the Pc/Steam community is okay with it coming over to this community, and while there are advantages, like preventing piracy, for some, online only play is a feature that goes against one’s purchasing morals for other individual reasons.
That said, it’s more of a wait and see situation, no real reason for anyone to get riled up.
An indie game you can buy right now on steam.
Their "vision" of the game was the same. A multiplayer experience. With 3 people being needed to play. They were stuck on this online only philosophy. Tons of players asked them to reconsider, myself included. Offline solo play for an indie game with an uncertain fanbase is a must. I will not waste another $20 on steam to play a game that is dead on arrival.
This echoed the sentiments of most of the fanbase of Blightbound. But they didn't listen to the fans, and outright denied any input. Now that their game has 11 people currently playing and 20 players peak in a 24 hour period, they decided to finally add bots, but still not offline mode. Kinda too little, too late. Indie games live and die by their devs decisions. I hope that this dev changes their minds, but until then this will be a pass for me. I was super excited for it too. I'll probably just stick with Valheim.
We'll have servers in over 20 locations, including South America yes! Also including NA/EU, Brazil, South Africa, and Australia to name a few.
There is NO offline play. You HAVE to be connected to their servers to play.
Nope, It doesn't put my mind at ease at all. 2021 and it's ridiculous you can't have a offline solo mode. Game's as a service is a horrible business model and anti consumer. It's force obsoletion. I wanted to buy this game but now will not unless you can say that years after you've abandoned it I can still play it solo, offline if I choose to. otherwise, thank you and good luck.
