Grid based rigid building system makes no sense in prehistoric times
Any change of updating to a modern free-form building system? Manor Lords and Ostriv has ruined so many games lol.

That wouldn't be an 'update', but a complete bottom-up rewrite.

Not really, I don't think.

Buildings just snap to whole-number coordinates on the map's X-Y plane is all. It doesn't seem like it would take much to change that snap value to a different, smaller increment. It could also be done for rotation.

By editing the save file, we can move objects around to any X/Y/Z coordinate without crashing the game, so we at least know the engine can handle going "off-grid" as it is now.

Plus, even within the game naturally, we already observe that objects are allowed to exist anywhere at any elevation and in any quantity. We can see it when items are sometimes dropped on the ground "inside" tents but without being "contained" by that tent. Similarly, dropped items from harvested plants and fallen humans are often on top of each other (clipping) and are retrieved and manipulated without issue.

My only question/concern would be how it would affect walls/gates & farming plots.

Adding something like this as an afterthought is very likely very painful.

However, recently we already got the two diagonal axis for certain buildings and we might be able to extend that list.. but it only really works well with round buildings. Square buildings would likely occupy more space diagonal than in the grid. The fact that there are no roads in this game would make it less complicated.

I would never ever expect the dev to change this part of the game at this point. We can cross fingers for the next one and other future games in this genre,
However it is that things work on this basic level of mechanic, when you, for example, build walls diagonally as well as platforms with them, it's different and sometimes relatively 'wonky'. It works, but you must design slightly differently when doing that. So, this is a clue to me as to how it MIGHT not be an easy and straightforward thing to do this.
