all the farm animals eat can both Hay and straw.
But hay - is grass (you're right). So you can get it from one field more, than straw.
Straw - more quality type of grass (long elastic steady stem). It's good to build. Hard to gain.
Hay - every dried grass to feed pets. Easy to pick from every field.
So, only in absence of hay you feed by straw.
I would also like to see thatch as something that can be made from river reeds and/or straw, so there's less pressure between building and supporting livestock. Ostriv has a nice thatch setup, for example.
But part of my wishes here is because I'd enjoy beautifying my village, getting those pretty colors and just general foliage all around within my village...and I don't think that people in these time periods were very worried about aesthetic landscaping - our aesthetic scaping comes in the form of spiritual structures, and that's perfect enough for the game. Also I figure otherwise the tree planting dynamics are just what they need to be...probably couldn't or shouldn't change it any.
would be fun to have
more elaborate grazing+feeding system
Yes, you are totally right this is quite wrong in the game, we are considering some potential fixes to this to make it more realistic.
It's very nice to hear it.
