Surely the purpose of hunting the animal is to get its resources - not to let them lie and rot :-)
I cant stand having to watch each individual person and make them go back to the kill time and time again to fill their inventory before going back rather than picking up 1 item and wasting all the time travelling.
The only ones who fill their inventory are the ones carving him up.
If it doesn't work like that for you and they never pick up the stuff from animals, then this clearly sounds like a bug that needs to get fixed.
His needs should be secondary to the needs of the tribe: "The needs of the many..."
I always have concerns with AI in games like this, but found that I haven't had any issues with this one because most issues are caused by having too much going on at once and too little understanding of how things intertwine (initially). Also, not everyone needs a spear, sling, or bow, but I make sure everyone has a knife.
Lastly, during harvesting seasons (primarily summer) try to do less hunting and more harvesting, and then fall, winter, and spring build up your meat/skins reserves - oh, and utilize the trader - don't try to do it all on your own.
