Get used to it... it's just one of the challenges to overcome and recover from. Pretty pointless griping about every little setback, since that's essentially what this game is all about.
Besides, if current events (i.e. news headlines for the past few months) have taught us anything, it's that a disease or virus can become a very serious problem before anybody can do very much about it -- and all the human race could do a few thousand years ago was pray.
Diseases happen by random, and have a bonus chance of occurring if the person/animal has low stats.
Infection is basically disease but for people/dogs wounded in battle.
