Are you serious with that?? You think it's logical to have a kind of tree that can't be chopped down?
I don't understand your concern. What exactly is balance-breaking about trees returning a bit of wood when chopped down?
You can plant a bazillion trees of your own for free and then chop them down for wood. Realistic perhaps IRL but would be an exploit in the game, as you are meant to put out a work area for logging.
So? It should take at least a few years for those trees to have grown enough to give any substantial yield in wood / sticks. Same as it would take normal, unattended trees a few years to grow before chopping them down becomes a viable option.
The game already really drags by the time you've reached the bronze age. Adding more tedium makes no sense. It is not difficult to conceive planting evergreen trees either.
Then again... I would sacrifice this whole discussion if it meant more interesting content to drive the late game was introduced. The game is very uninteresting in the later stages.
And balance what ? When you have enough people doing slaughtering livestocks , making bread and hunting / fishing , planting a fruit tree that take a large pile just for 1 single fruit aren't worth it , you still have a large food stockpile in your granary .
