should farms be built Outside of walls or inside?

- plant only in one place; if you spread the fields, villagers will waste time walking back and forth at harvest time;
- plant all kinds of grain; you never know when the disease will occur, and it is possible that it devastates the entire crop;
- have at least 50% sickles per villager (or 75% if possible);
- decrease tasks in late winter and late summer so that villagers are fat and happy at the time of planting and harvesting;
- plant outside the walls; walls are expensive and laborious and it is difficult to build them so wide to accommodate the crops.

And one advice:
- calculate exactly how many fields you need ... crops are the best way to unnecessarily increase the workload and ruin the game.

I usually end up doing both; 4-6 plots within the walls and the rest outside. The raiders have always ignored my crops outside the walls, but of course it usually takes longer for the villagers to walk to and from those crops.

I recommend planting only Barley.

I rely heavily on domestic animals. The extra Straw from Barley is converted into food by Goats at a rate high enough that disease is negligible. (Just make sure you keep enough Straw on hand to last an extra year).

(NOTE: When you do that, still also plant a few of each other type of crop. That "seeds" the disease pool with extra (favourable) outcomes.)

I also recommend a maximum of 50% sickles, because it guarantees the majority of your villagers remain available to continue doing other tasks.

When blizzards still used to be a thing, I planted my pulses inside the walls, to keep pops from freezing... but somehow people don't seem to freeze as easily lately :)

I'm lazy, so I don't calculate; just watch your straw chart over the course of a year: do you(r animals) consume more than you produce? plant more next year, or lose some animals -> your workload will determine which one it will be... moral of the story: there are several ways to do this, one more thought out than the other, but it's mostly preference :)

Most important tip in my opinion?

If you do that, you will be immune to any crop disease, or that time when the raiders come during harvest/planting, and you don't get to finish it.

plant just one crop: emmer when you dont have animals and barley when you do (and your herd is large). thats much more efficient than having multiple crops. to combat crop disease have a grain reserve.

dont build continuous walls, build forts at the directions from which raiders come. 3-5 such forts with 4 towers in each (6 in ancient warriors scenario) is just enough. so walls wont hinder the movements of your workers.

Ha, nice wall placement in keypoints! I will try that.

Raiders seem to ignore everything other then people and defensive structures. You can put granaries and haystacks right next to the farms, outside the walls, and they should be fine.

I agree with what you're saying but like everything in this game you can balance expansion with immediate need.

I always have more fields than I need but use the task priority option to force harvesting before the season changes, scaling up and down according to what my population can handle - I use the workload and food storage widgets to gauge when I need to make changes - reducing priorities if the workload is too high or boosting them when the available food levels start dropping.

And I'm reading them all many years later and learned a lot thanks to them. <3
