Collect KPs (hunting, manufacturing and building) and do as you did to get out of Paleolithic to Mesolithic.
Press key 8 to see the progression of hunted animals, buildings and fabricated tools.
If your map has plenty of hunts you’re good to go higher population.
They key to early game is the basic essentials must be sustainable before upping your population.
I had an experimental game on hardcore Very Ancient Warriors mod and I did not notice I went up to 40s and my food is dwindling so I have to force hunt quite far distances even on winter.
This game is a city builder. The mechanisms used to control development in city builders are money generation and budgeting. Budgeting controls how the money generated is spent.
The period this game covers predates money so your capital/finance are your people and their time for making stuff. The budgetary controls are the stockpile levels.
You can monitor the tasks via the workload screen (keyboard 7) which will show tasks in course and those planned. Ideally you want to make sure your settlers have some free time so keeping the workload under 100% is good. this is where your stockpiles come in. Via the Stockpile levels screen (F4) you can change the quotas your settlers will try to fill.
Another tip is to avoid setting tasks manually (as each task will bump up the workload) unless you really have to. Use work areas to designate the resources you want collected and how many people will be responsible for their collection and let the ai work out the rest.
So working in agriculture (planting and harvesting) and carrying heavy loads without means of transportation are the main causes of unhappiness of the people.
Obvious, isn't it? Who likes hard work?
To avoid this problem, reduce tasks before and after planting and harvesting (so they can regain morale) and have many sledges (and cars).
Also, don't forget that they need various types of moral-related structures. Usually players only build totems (because they give more prestige) but all structures are required.
