WHY attacked by 5 hyenas in first 60 seconds?!!

i JUST got this game and i thought the problem with hyenas was in Nomad mode on Hardcore. i am playing the first friggin' freeplay thing called Continental Dawn on Normal. i launch the game and within 15 seconds i get attacked by 2 hyenas. 30 seconds later 3 MORE show up! WHY? i understand life was tough back then but come on devs, let me get started, learn the game a little before wiping me out.

did i start out wrong? what should i start out with to learn the basics before having to fight for my life? my first impression was NOT good and i ain't playing this (as in refund) if this is how it is. i know there is an easy mod (flatlands) but mods for me come later. thanks for any help with this. i am an experienced but not a hardcore player and want to learn this before getting overrun. in fact, i hate games like that.

Because 1.3's current game balance is screwed up and the devs have already stated changes are on the way. As to if the changes are enough, we shall see.

I got ambushed by a pack of hyenas too very early ingame. But after playing the tutorial first I knew how to defend myself and my starting crew just killed the hyenas.
So yes playing a tutorial helps. And if it really happens by really bad luck that one gets wiped within the first 30 seconds. Just start a new game... It's not very likely to happen every time. And hopefully you learned to be prepared and have an eye on those predators.
That's still no need to nerf the whole game.
But that's just me and I like a good challenge...😁
Actually I was a bit disappointed that I survived my first winter... 😋

I'm playing the same scenario, and though the hyenas were nearby, they didn't attack before I'd had a chance to build a few tents and get some weapons. If anything, the game felt very easy for me, until the raiders and cave lions started attacking in the copper age. Even then, I was able to send a few people out to take down a mammoth (just because I wanted to see them fight a mammoth).

I think you had the bad luck to start out with the hyenas too close.

@NiceGuy, you’re right! Learn how to play the game and it’s really easy.

I made lots of YouTube video (though I’m rookie), not for monetary reason but to show how I did the Northlands hardcore if players are interested. My English is bad as well as my delivery but there are things that can be learned from it.

These replies shows how game defenders always kill off the games that they defend. The devs have already acknowledged that 1.3 has issues with the carnivore aggression and numbers and said fixes are incoming.

Did you watch Lion King? Those things are total jerks. Seriously though that might have been just bad luck. I started the game the same way and the animal attacks were pretty gradual for me. I'm now in the copper age and still haven't really had any serious attack with more than 2 deaths on my side.

Dev has already stated that there are issues with the game that he or she is already working on. You are just attacking me because I called you out earlier. But, I expected nothing less from you. Anyways, you are clearly not worth my time as you are doing nothing more than attention seeking now. Time to cut you off from that which you seek. /Block.

There may be issues with animal aggression in the game, but as I said, I haven't encountered them in the same mode the OP is playing. I doubt it's related to his ability to play the game. I didn't have a horde of hyenas attack me early on; he did. I did have some of my villagers killed when they wandered too close to the hyenas (as in about a quarter of the way around the lake), but I assumed that was to be expected. Packs of hyenas and wolves are dangerous to people armed with nothing but wooden spears and knives.

If the developers and other players believe the patch made animals too aggressive, I'm not saying they're wrong. But I am saying the OP had very bad luck at the start of the game. I was lucky enough not to. So if he were to start over, it might go better for him.

You didn't 'call' me out earlier, you 'attacked' my opinion, cause it stands in contrast with yours.
and yes, the devs have said they will make some changes to make it more fair. Doesn't change or invalidate anything i've said.

No one has actually stated they believe that, aside from some players. Other players, including myself, disagree.
but devs will be making some changes at least, whether to fix some unwanted behaviour from animals or to adjust the difficulty, we don't know.

I've logged hundreds of hours playing this game and I agree that either the lethality or frequency of predator attacks could be toned down a little. Even better, make it configurable in scenarios... assuming it isn't already. I can handle the attacks but it sure is brutal depending on your luck with the start.
