It wasn't a huge hindrance to use it, though I was using it against Juvies. It hits hard, harder than the rocket launcher equivalent (whose name I forget) I believe, but like you said it has to charge up. If you get the timing down, you can duck into cover, start to charge it, and then poke out with a second or less to go and take your shot. Enemies don't exactly dodge and weave, so it's easy enough to land the shot. It's also decent at taking out the turrets, but if you have the Zapper that would probably be better, depending on your distance.
In short: it's not as bad as it seems, with the right playstyle, but there are likely better options for you to use in its place.
I can see the fun in this, but again, it's not really a valid survival tactic on harder difficulties as you would sufficate to death long before the room is cleared. Not to mention it's a huge waste of ammunition.
Yeah you're right it must have been a headshot since the damage output indicator was yellow! But I don't think my Toaster is upgraded yet. I'll need to verify.
I use the Toaster situationally. If I'm going to a ship where there tend to be lots of windows in the tileset, I definitely bring the toaster. For example, the medical ships have full-windowed doors. Much easier to make situational use of the Toaster there and pick baddies off from behind a locked door, or take out Peepers from a mile away.
I feel the Riveter works really well against Patients as well.
This saved me an awkward (and potentially deadly) learning experience.
