The map lasted for 7 turns, then auto-ended.
If need be, you can set up something like that, if you're not into plugins.
You can even set the map to end by standing on a certain space (like a gate) instead of turn count.
Conversation events? Sure.
Shops? Easily.
Houses with intel? Piece of cake.
Treasure Chests? You bet.
Arenas? ...Um, I actually haven't figured out how to set one of those up, sadly.
But, I'm just saying they did have a form of free roam.
(Admittedly, now Fire Emblem: Three Houses has a proper, genuine free roam mode, with the monastery)
