Using a Character Bust instead of Portrait
So I was checking out some Japanese SRPG Studio projects over at Freem:

https://www.freem.ne.jp/search/?keyword=SRPG+Studio

I noticed that most of them used character busts instead of portraits. Is this built into SRPG Studio or does it need custom scripts?

Hey man, long-time-no-see lol. Any way, you should be able to do cut-ins no problem. The option is there (labled charater illustraion) but unfortunately I haven't done it personally so I can't walk you through the steps to achieve it. You might want to check the SRPG Studio subreddit and see if anybody has instructions for ya there :)

Hey thanks for the reply, I'll tinker around with the character illustration option and see if I can dig up anything on the subreddit, although its been pretty quiet there for a while.

No worries. I feel you on the subreddit, the place isn't very active. Also kind of annoying that some of the rescources they post there they don't confirm comercial liscensing or anything. Any way, let me know if you figure out how to do this because I'd be interseted in seeing a guide for it put up. I know how to do it in combat sequences but that's about it...

I made a tutorial just for you. The first link is the Imgur version and the next one is on the fan wiki.
