If it still is problematic you or the server is most likely behind a symmetric NAT at which the NAT Punchthrough technique won't work. If you're behind a symmetric NAT you need to set up port forwarding.
Could also be one of the ISP:s blocking the ports required for the game (even though unlikely).
The online features worked on a different computer because it was set up differently or had just the right IPv4 address that one instance, and so did yours when the problem spontaneously solved itself.
If you're using the manual port forwarding method (which you probably should be, if you don't want to rely on luck) you'll have to modify the entry you created for SFD by finding out the new IPv4 address (Windows key + 'R' => 'cmd' => 'ipconfig') and using that as the new address.
