The only DLC where you bring your main game characters in is A New Power Awakens Part 1 and Part 2, but you will not be overleveled even if you completed the main story and all the side quests. Additionally, playing these 2 DLCs will unlock all the transformations for Goku and Vegeta up to SSJB, and that would ruin the natural progression of the base game.
The other DLCs (Trunks, Bardock, 23rd World Tournament) use dedicated characters that are separated from the main story.
fairynuff, thanks for the tip. I'm not too keen on purchasing the overpriced season passes but I do like the throwback to early DBZ so will be diving into it when it goes for cheaper.
Play either main game first, or World Tournament first. Bardock after the Frieza saga is finished, And the rest after the main game. Even though technically the Trunks DLC could be done after the Cell Saga is done it delves a bit into it's own new saga afterward.
If you know what happens in DBZ, then arguably you could do all but the Power Awakens DLC at the start.
Technically the Power Awakens part 1 doesn't spoil anything other than the existence of a few characters, it's just a grinding spot.
The way I play it is I tend to do the DLCs first. I don't finish Power Awakens, I just go in to it to get a soul emblem. If overleveling is a concern, beating him once for the emblem at the very start gives you enough exp to level up once, but at that point you already can level up quite quickly, Just don't use the water he gives you, because it gives a lot of exp and is the main reason the dlc is used for grinding (the first tier water gives 5000 exp). If you don't want to level up at all, then you could just wait a bit to the point where around 300 exp isn't that much, like after the Raditz or Vegeta fight. I return later for another soul emblem.
Power Awakens does affect Goku and Vegeta's level. History of Trunks has one affect on base game Trunks, and it only takes effect after you have completed the base game. That effect is that it gives him access to his DLC skills on his skill tree. Bardock DLC doesn't affect the base game at all. World Tournament doesn't effect the base game at all either as far as I can tell. The DLC does include soul emblems which can make it easier to rank up your community boards a bit earlier on, but the effects of the community boards are small until late game anyway. You can also obtain items to rank up the soul emblems in the dlc. Outside of Power Awakens however, the dlc has it's own inventory and money value separate from the main game's meaning you can only use those items while in the dlc, and when you return to the main game you won't have access to those items until you return to the dlc.
this is the way, im on my way to redo this entire thing with all the dlcs in this exact order..
The Beerus DLC straight up warns you that it's cheating through the dialogue and it's not really "Battle of the Gods", in fact they make a pigs ear of it. Resurrection F is less so but makes sense as the final thing you play. I like the fights in the Beerus DLC but they it shows that it was the first DLC with how...strange it is.
