It's actually pretty a decent game, only if you do not expect the Western AAA level standard from it. I've already said it in other posts, but if the Western AAA games and big Hollywood movies and such are considered "luxury", then the Japanese entertainment brands are basically "junk food".

The major Western game developers and big Hollywood movies spend so much money to make a product, but as for the Japanese, they really do not spend much money on their stuff. Not to mention, when Disney makes 2 billion dollars from The Avengers: Endgame movie by selling it globally and being a global cultural icon, Bandai Namco makes... millions of dollars from gacha aka loot boxes of Dragonball smartphone games like Dokkan Battle and Legends, and also Dragonball Heroes, which a lot of Japanese Dragonball fans love to pay money for. Also, a lot of Japanese children love to pay money to buy cards of Dragonball Heroes cards and Bandai Namco makes a lot of money from this as well.

Meaning, the West is more about quality, when Japan is more about quantity. Which explains why Japan has so many anime every year and most of them never really get much of attention.

And Dragonball makes so much money for Bandai Namco, literally Dragonball is the savior of the Japanese anime industry.

And even though they make so much money from Dragonball, their latest movie Dragonball: Broly movie's budget was only just 8.5 million dollars. So, I would not be surprised if this game got similar amount of low budget here as well.

The Japanese entertainment brands are just, meant to be cheap, and have simple fun and stuff like that I would say. I think Nintendo also is like this as well.

Mediocre this game is not. This is a good game. According to others; metacritic it is also a good game for now. It's still at a 78. If it drops to 70 like code vein; it's still a good game. Under that then it's mediocre.

Yeah I'll probably return it. Hard to explain but game feels empty and soulless.

Indeed. But as I said before, not the same kind of "AAA" that you would expect from the Western standard.

Dragonball Z: Kakarot is basically a "AAA" "Japanese" game, meaning you can not expect the Western-level of "AAA"ness from a Japanese developer.

But then again, I guess you could expect the Western-level AAA games from the Japanese developers like Square-Enix, FromSoftware, Capcom and Kojima Productions, but not from others. And definitely not from Bandai Namco for sure, especially the Anime games.

So, even though Dragonball Z: Kakarot may be a AAA game, that only means that it is just a glorified junk food.

This game is indeed awful and only fanboys are defending this trash.

Eh, it's more like AA at best. Publisher doesn't matter as much as the developer does, and CC2 isn't AAA tier.

And that would be fine in it's own sense, if the price matched the product. But you can't simply say "Well, it's okay it's not up to par with the standard set for the video game industry, because it's japanese" That just makes no sense at all, unless the price justifies it.

this is a poor excuse there are plenty of brilliant japanese big budget AAA games that puts similar western games to shame. The fact is just that these anime games are cookie cutter games they can churn out every year and sell on brand recognition alone, it has nothing to do with japanese standards and more to do with the fact people buy them despite their low quality and uninspired game play.

While this game is a little better than mediocre, the short answer is: Make it playable, then it will sell to the fans.

Why put a lot more effort and money into it and maybe only receive a little more money when all you need to do is not make it terrible and the anime fans will buy it anyway for nostalgia. Business.
Also, this game comes from a country where mobile gaming is no. 1; You can easily see that in the filler stuff.

You might as well read my other comment on this post before posting this.

"But then again, I guess you could expect the Western-level AAA games from the Japanese developers like Square-Enix, FromSoftware, Capcom and Kojima Productions, but not from others. And definitely not from Bandai Namco for sure, especially the Anime games."

And if you mean the Japanese AAA games like Dark Souls and Resident Evil 2 Remake, then ya... they did sell a lot, but not in Japan. And also Death Stranding as well. Why? Simple, because there is "literally" nothing Japanese about those games to begin with. Which explains why Japanese gaming market is completely dominated by Nintendo games, especially Pokemon.

Meaning what the Western audience and the Japanese audience expect from gaming is different. A Japanese developer like Kojima Productions makes a game like Death Stranding, basically to sell for the Western audience.

And when the Western gamers prefer PS4, Xbox One and PC, the Japanese prefer mainly Nintendo Switch and mobile gaming.

If you do not understand the cultural differences, then obviously you have no clue about all this. And I am Japanese, so I know.
