Should I watch DragonBall Z Kai before buying this game?
My friend told me to do so as it was basically a summary of Dragonball Z.

Should I?

No. Kai is garbage. Watch DBZ or don’t watch at all. Not to mention this game includes some of the best filler episodes in DBZ, which aren’t included in Kai.

I wonder if this game will have 30-minute long episodic power-ups like the original DBZ.

Wouldn't it make sense to watch Kai to get my head round the story and then play this to get my dose of DBZ?

Do what you will. I didn't watch much of Kai at all, because I liked the original more. Mainly because of the music too. The music was far better in the original than in Kai. But do what you feel like doing. If you enjoy it, then you enjoy it. I'm not sure about fillers in this game, but it'll have everything in needs story-wise, among extra stories that weren't in the anime/manga before.

Not required. The story of Dragon Ball Z is very straight forward. It was written to be an action story catering to Japanese children. It’s quite simplistic.

The game will explain everything you need to know in terms of major characters and cover all the major plot points. Everything else after that is just icing.

the only thing kai was good for was the battle music but anything else it sucked

OP, ignore these people. They are chatting rubbish.

Kai is the best version of watching DBZ. It cuts out all the useless filler (people aren't powering up for 30 episodes) and the FUNimation English Dub of Kai has the mostly the same voice actors after 10 years of playing the characters (after performing the character for so many years, you are obviously going to be better at doing the voice acting for them).

You don't need to watch the show to enjoy the games, but there is no rush to play the game. It will always be available in the same Steam sale.
I mean why watch it when you can play it? Yes you should watch the anime but you can always do that after. In the end its up to you maybe watching the anime you will appreciate the game more, I don't know.
if you havent watched dragonball z by now, you have bigger problems
This game should follow the story of DBZ well enough that you won't need to watch Kai or Z.

Picking between the two, go for Kai. The people who swear Z is better are blinded by nostalgia. The claims of people powering up for entire episodes *are not hyperbole* (though other things do happen in those episodes, it's not entirely just them screaming for twenty minutes on end). There are long stretches of time in the original where characters do nothing but stare at each other (Thirty seconds here and there add up when snipped out!) and those, along with entire filler episodes and arcs, are removed (Sadly including the fantastic driving episode, but you can really just watch the filler separately at any point. They're practically stand alone.) in Kai.

The music is different because it turns out the original composer was a plagiarist. His fantastic music was fantastic because he stole from many other artists. So, yeah, that's a downside. But, English-wise, the translations are far superior to the English dubs, the voice acting is higher quality and more comfortable, and the fidelity to the original translations are more faithful. No more "Luckily, that was just a cargo plane filled with robots" or "My name is Hercule." (See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEncqyKH9M4 or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9bPRFe5GRA for examples)

There are a few things that're censored from the original, of course, but that's because of broadcast standards in Japan changing. They're not as cool with bloody holes the size of volley balls in Goku's chest as they used to be. But there's still plenty of blood, if that's what you really care about for some reason.

So, yeah, go for Kai over Z, but do check out the original Dragonball at some point. Z/Kai are really just sequels to it, after all.

If there is not 13 hours in this game dedicated to Frieza's changing of multiple forms I'm refunding.

But jokes aside, just go with Kai. If you're just after the story then you may as well watch the version that just focuses on story rather than lots of staring at each other and shouting while powering up.

I'd say Z is the best way to go but thats me. everyone seems to like which ever one they like and get pretty defensive about it. I liked the voice acting more in Z (english) also their was less censorship when it came to the violence. I also enjoyed the filler episodes they were usually funny and a good break from the action. just watch which ever you want you will not get a clear answer here.

Though I suggested Kai, I have to agree on the Z voice acting being better.
It blows my mind when people say that the voice acting is better. Just listen to the linked clips and you can tell that there's a world of difference.

Kai is fully based on the manga, while the first dbz is full of filling, thoughts of characters taking 15 min, lot of fillers that are not all equally good.

But considering the way the game adapt Dragon Ball Z, you can just play the game, it's as complete as the anime.
