Is there going to be a free battle mode?

That's the only thing putting me off from buying this game and from what I've read online there isn't one? Or am I wrong?

No, it's a 3d RPG like Zelda and Legacy of Goku. It's not made to fight other people, and there's like 5 playable characters.

Aight that explains it better. By free battle mode I meant the standard CPU vs player battles where you could pick a character from the available roster and fight other characters with it

Well, again, there's not really enough playable characters for that. You'd be done with it really fast.
Anyway, from the looks of it, the Time Machine should allow you to replay previous fights, so there's that... but probably no "what if" fight like Majin Vegeta vs Cell, though.

a free battlle mode or boss rush mode woould be great but after finishing the game you can freeely switch characters and do random battles or training that's the closes we have right now
