Regular cannons are very useful for protecting against the thin bottom layer of creeper. It spreads much more quickly than tall creeper, and mortars have trouble dealing with it.
This. I’ve noticed that mortars have a huge problem dealing with creeper that is suddenly right on top of them.
The cannons target the closest thing first (like creeper they are sitting on) but mortars seem to target the part of the creeper that isn’t slowly killing them. Have lost a lot of mortars this way and they really do need cannons to defend them on the ground.
In practice what I do when I'm pushing the frontline slowly, I get 10+ mortars and 1, maybe 2 cannons. But when you want to land on enemy island or kind of behind enemy lines, you better take a few more cannons to secure the beachhead.
Sprayers can also fulfil cannons role, but they are less efficient with it, need time to build up AC.
Mortars are great against large amount of creeper (e.g. from high ground or against creeper "waves"). Turrets are best against continuous low-level creeper (such as spawners and general expansion).
For advancing the front line, I go back and forth on whether cannon-heavy or mortar-heavy front line are better. I usually favor mortars, but it seems like a thick wall of cannon actually forces the creeper back faster
