We only see them a couple of times in the campaign, but I have yet to understand what they do exactly?
They just slowly seep into the creeper. I assumed they would make the creeper a bit stronger but I didn't really notice a difference.

I know you can select them and shut them down which seems to be unintended though

They turn creeper that passes through them into crimson creeper which takes 80% less damage from all weapons except AC where the damage is the same

It's a more noticeable later on, especially in the final mission when you get a large amount of creeper being funneled through one of those.

Note that even though it looks like all the creeper is crimson creeper all the way down to the ground, only the surface and some of the creeper below is crimson creeper. If you can spray anticreeper on the top, you can strip the crimson creeper off the top, and leave normal creeper behind.

If instead you use always on sprayers to flood the area, you will be getting rid of the normal creeper underneath leaving just the crimson creeper, which is less desirable.

In short, get your sprayers elevated. Crimson creeper floats to the surface of the creeper, so you want to fight it from above, not below.

Specifically, they are 80% hardened against normal weapon damage meaning they take 20% damage to everything except anticreeper. Fire a mortar at regular creeper and at crimson creeper and you will most definitely notice a difference.
