The first game was just stages that increased in size, with sort of side-mission stages (constellations) that involve hitting specific sizes while gathering particular types of items and stuff like that.
The second game expanded things a bit in terms of environments, and had some of the more memorable levels of the series, such as one where you rolled around in the sky to pick up clouds, one where you're on a racetrack and can't stop the katamari from moving forward, and one where you are rolling up fireflies around a campsite to make the brightest katamari possible on a peaceful evening. It's a substantial step forward.
While you played the latest one, and the one that is most advanced in terms of types of levels and scope of the game, there are a couple of things that Forever can't touch compared to Katamari Damacy and We <3 Katamari. For one, it seems like the line/dialogue writing was handled by different people, as it's not nearly as funny and charming as it is in the first two games. Also the "story" is really cute in the Damacy - I can't so much recall how it played out in We <3 Katamari, as it's been so long since I was able to play it. I think the more important thing that Forever couldn't deliver as well though is the soundtrack. If I recall correctly, Forever had a bunch of remixes and such, and while they were ok, they couldn't hold a candle to the original songs that were on the OSTs for the first two games.
Thank you for the detailed answer!!
I enjoyed getting the platinum for Katamari Forever as well! Incredibly hard and satisfactory. Thank you, I'll play Damacy REROLL :)
