I suppose you could, with no crew, possibly try to play the market to get back into the game, but that seems really not fun as a major aspect of gameplay (Unlike Space Warlord Organ Trading Simulator, say, which is focused on that).
So you can play mechanic as well. Buy trashed vehicles, repair and sell for profit. But i think mechanics only get to work when you go away on a ring dive, so kind of pointless to have helpers in that case.
Luckily, the repair benefit that mechanics give is based on the number of available mechanics at the time you're repairing/replacing the equipment, regardless of whether they're on board your ship or not. It only doesn't count a mechanic if they're on medical leave.
So you can sell when you only have one ship, but only in the same transaction of buying a replacement.
If you find that you’ve screwed yourself trading in for too much of a lemon I think this is reversible by trading in the new ship for the old one (which should show up in the dealership).
