What does hiring crew do?

i know some of them boast specific stats. like time slowdown, but what about the geologists? and the people who predict prices?

Geologists are the people that predict prices and they are one of the most useful crewmembers you can get. Once you have them onboard, they'll show approximate composition and price of any ore nugget around your ship.

You can view the skill description of any crewmember by hovering mouse over the skill in the hiring menu.

how does the price predicting work??

In two ways:
1. When you look at the market prices, you'll see a prediction on the right side of the chart, past the current price. Better your geologist, narrower it will be.
2. When assessing price in the rings, this determines how much error there will be in the appraisal.

so it could tell me if i could sell something for more?

It will tell you if s/he thinks the price will rise or drop in near future. This is most likely useful in late game, when you trade a lot of ore in one go.

i have a geologist and theyre not telling me the prices of ores floating aorund.

You can check the range of identification in the crew menu. Inexperienced geologists will require you to get really close to the ore in order to do their work.

ive had ores against the hull of my ship and it didnt say anything

Not on the hiring menu, but in the first tab, where your crew is listed. You should have both accuracy and range specified in the top panel.

oh, i dont have that menu. it just says i can fire or not use them

This menu is available in all versions of the game - it's on the top just after you enter the crew screen, above your current crew.

oh! i got it! it said the distance is 200m - but if its up againsnt the ship why didnt they tell me the price?
