Crew level
Hello

Newbie question

First off i'd like to say that, as a new player, i had to dig through youtube to find an anszwer about whether or not "low grade" recruits can level up, it'd be nice if the game was more forthcoming about that feature

So, question, what affects your crew gaining experience ?
Mechanic seems straightforward, just fix stuff
Astrologer i'm not sure, she gained a level when i docked back at the station
Geologist i don't know either, but i'm assuming just scan a lot
Pilot i have no idea, she's been on board the longest, i think she's the lowest level they can come as (self taught, no experience), yet she hasn't upgraded once yet

Would appreciate someone explaining that to me, and maybe, the game to be a bit less opaque on the matter if possible ?

They all gain experience when they actively use their skills or they hit the books during down time at the station. The higher their level the better they perform their specific functions. (The two skills outlined to in the Crew screen when you hire)

You can see the current impact of your crews training level by looking at the main screen of the crew page at the top. Want to see how a crew member effects the result simply add or subtract them from the crew.

The only value not covered in that display is Repair Time.

As for opaqueness. Not to put too fine of a point on it. This is a game in active development. That's what Early Access is. The developer may decide to change how a feature works before version 1 rolls out, so why rail on them for not having every bit of documentation in place now if it will just need to be replaced later?

Rather than plod through YouTube video's, which will ultimately become outdated, you could have simply asked your question here. The Community (here and on Discord) is currently the best body of knowledge on how the game currently works. The developers come here and answer questions and concerns too.

Make use of that knowledge and you should find the games opaqueness less frustrating.

I'm not railing, i'm asking, since it's early access

Alright not railing...

I forgot to add earlier that more experienced crew can train less experienced crew if you have duplicate roles. Also if you have 2 crew overlapping and one crew member is superior than the other the crew member with the highest skill counts towards the applied bonus.

I don't know, it all makes sense, and i already gathered most of what you said from looking at the active crew effects window beforehand

But i already went through 30 or so Ring Dives and my pilot is still stuck at "no experience"

She piloted us through enough money to upgrade to a 1M ship + 500K MPU, but she still has no experience

Could it be a bug ?

edit - also my adrenal slowdown value started at 45% when i first hired her, now it's at 59%, could it be indicative that she's actually leveling up ?

Is it just very slow ? I don't mind, i just want to make sure i'm doing it correctly and it actually works (and if it doesn't i don't mind bugs either i just want to know)

It is indeed.

Well, I'm not sure how that would work out, but a pilot has 2 roles : tactical awareness (detecting other ships and telling you if they are friend or foe), and adrenal slowdown, which slows the game when you're flying fast and close to a ringroid.

Since you can't do much about encounters, maybe flying dangerously could be useful ?

Thanks, she actually just finally got a level

I'm a bit reckless while mining, and also escaped pirates twice by the skin of my teeth leaking from everywhere, so in the end i think it's just slow, which is fine, i like the grind

If anything i really think the game could use better player feedback with crew experience, although obfuscation might be intentional to avoid turning crewmates into statistics

Not all activities count as real piloting either. Adrenaline time probably counts more than simply drifting. Though I haven't tested it.

I do know hiring a newbie without anyone to coach them takes forever to gain levels. Which makes sense, you learn faster via "do this not that" vs needing to make all the mistakes yourself.

There is also little point to doing so. The crew pay is once a month, not once a dive or anything more costly.

Get someone midlevel and let them mature. It's worth it in the long run. You will want to swap out crew at some point as no all crew quests can be held with just the four crew members.

Actually, Tactical Awareness is your Astrogator the second Pilot skill is Course Anticipation.

I think this gets triggered when you click on a nugget and maneuver towards it, but I'm not sure how much the AI Autopilot ties in or masks the ability.

That makes a lot of sense, it's surprisingly clever

I'm just a beginner, i saw a pilot at 1900 when everyone else was around 10 to 50k and she had green skills so i figured let's go, since i had absolutely no idea what kind of money i could expect

Well now she's here to stay, she'll learn the hard way

My bad ! Thanks for correcting this error :)

This is my primary question how much experience does the pilot get if you're using AI primarily over a manual navigation?

Geologists and navigators can reduce the cost of waterway cleaning and environmental compensation. The more powerful you are, the more you can choose anywhere manually, and the extra cost is lower.Try to go to the deepest 700km, remember to bring heavy firepower, there are many pirates.
