Moonlets
So, I've seen moonlets with stuff trapped in them, and I've tried my hardest to break them like a pinata, but it doesn't seem possible. Do these have any in-game effect other than being a temp jump point?

Large moonlets 'can' have caves in them, which can house a couple different things.

Moonlets are great in any case because any slightly trained astrogator, with your ship set up to not waste time with the xenon drive will keep them marked long enough to get back out there and use them as a cheap jump deep into the rings.
With the semi recent rebalance to prices to xasar burn into the rings with a well trained crew, i'm not so certain how important it is, but still, its really nice early game when you're still getting the ropes and don't wanna risk ship damage or your time by diving manually.

So there's no way to mine these? I found one with uranium and all they do is sparkle

You can collect the uranium.

But don't shoot the uranium :)

if stuff is in it fly around it there is a entrance (if you see shiplike stuff shining to the surface it is a the astrobar).

You can refine the uranium before you collect it if you get really close with your ship and shoot the ores with a mass driver :))

For the life of me, I can't figure out how to collect the uranium. I'm in the cave and shooting it with a mass driver and nothing is happening.

If its loosely drifting (targetable) then you can just scoop it up, but i recommend a grabber since it basically eliminates the potential to destroy it with rcs fire. if its just purple crystals that you cant target then there background visuals you cant grab

You need to collect the Uranium chunks similarly to other chunks - fly your ship to it, use drones, or the arm. You cannot break open the moonlet from the outside. You must fly inside. Think of it like a cave.

Not all uranium moons have harvestable uranium.

The uranium is also pretty tough to spot as your geologist will not highlight it. There's only one Autopilot (it's the default one for the starter ship) that highlights harvestable material, and that does make it easier.
